Recycled Fabric

It’s no surprise that the conservation of our planet is a very important topic. People all over the world are finding new ways to lessen the impact of waste on our environment. One way the textile industry is working towards a more sustainable planet is by the use of RPET, or recycled polyester. This means taking things such as plastic bottles, industrial polyester waste, and even garments, and turning them into new recycled polyester fabrics. This innovative idea has made its way into multiple billion dollar companies; such as Adidas, Nike, Ikea, Coca-Cola, and many others.

Textile World magazine explains the process by stating, “currently, the majority of PET is recycled using mechanical methods to recycle PET bottles by washing, flaking and melting the material to be formed into textile grade fiber or filament. In addition to mechanical recycling, there are alternatives such as chemical recycling that breaks PET down from a polymer to monomer or more basic chemical components and upcycling, which takes fabrics or old clothes and breaks them down into fiber components for spinning into yarns.”

This process has so many benefits, including the fact that these recycled materials are not ending up in landfills across the world. Another benefit is that recycled polyester has all of the same qualities as virgin polyester, but it has a much lower environmental impact.

Santanderina Group gives us 2 wonderful reasons why RPET is better:

  1. Recycled polyester doesn’t require new petroleum to create, lowering the demand for new petroleum extraction and reducing our overall carbon footprint.
  2. Producing recycled polyester is better for the climate, creating 75% less CO₂ emissions than virgin polyester.

There are also many challenges that the textile industry faces with changes like this, however, reducing waste has the greatest value, making our planet cleaner. Check out our main page for more information on Fletcher Industries and our engineered solutions.
